Leading With What Lights You Up: Why Joy Is a Leadership Skill

Here’s a leadership truth we don’t talk about enough:

Leadership truth: Joy is a powerful source of energy—and often the first thing to slip away in the swirl of pressure, performance, and people management.

But when leaders reconnect with what lights them up, they lead with more clarity, steadiness, and presence.

But when leaders reconnect with what lights them up, they lead with more clarity, steadiness, and presence.

August arrives like a deep exhale—projects are midstream, teams are scattered, and the temptation to coast is real. But what if, instead of coasting, we treated August as a chance to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what makes us come alive?

Celebrated every August, Happiness Happens Month, it’s a call to notice the small things that bring us happiness and to spread that energy generously. It’s not about forced positivity or pretending everything is fine. It’s about creating space to reconnect to what’s good—and letting that goodness ripple out through our leadership.

That’s what Awesome August is all about.

Awesome Doesn’t Mean Always-On

Let’s be clear: awesome leadership isn’t loud, overconfident, or constantly performing.

Awesome doesn’t mean “crushing it.” It means connected—to your values, to your people, and to your own sense of vitality.

The most magnetic leaders aren’t the busiest or boldest.

They’re the ones who walk into a room and make people feel steadier, seen, and safe.

They model what it looks like to lead from purpose, not pressure.

So, this month, instead of pushing through, what if you paused to tune in? What if you actually took your vacation fully and completely?

Let’s use this month as a soft reset. Not a full overhaul—just a moment to realign.

Here are three invitations to guide your reflection as a leader this August:

1. Reignite: Where Does Joy Live in Your Leadership?

You can’t lead well if you’re depleted. But joy isn’t just about restit’s about reconnection.

Ask yourself:

    • What parts of your leadership bring you energy?
    • What conversations, projects, or moments make you feel most alive?
    • What small routines or rituals refill your cup?

Maybe it’s walking one-on-one meetings instead of video calls.

Maybe it’s the spark of mentoring someone.

Maybe it’s stepping back into your own learning and growth.

Whatever it is—name it. Protect it. Let it fuel you.

2. Reimagine: What Could Feel Easier or More Joyful?

With the usual pace disrupted, August is the perfect time to experiment. You don’t need a strategy retreat—just curiosity and maybe some vacation time.

Try this:

    • Cancel one recurring meeting that’s outlived its usefulness
    • Add a “What’s working?” moment to every team huddle
    • Invite your team to name one joyful moment from their week

Small changes signal that joy, reflection, and honesty belong in leadership – YOU set the tone.

3. Recommit: Who Do You Want to Be on the Way Forward?

Before the fall rush kicks in, take a beat. Recommit to the leader you’re becoming—not just the one you’ve been.

Ask yourself:

    • What kind of presence do I want to bring into rooms I walk into?
    • Where am I ready to lead with more honesty or heart?
    • What’s one thing I want to model for my team this month?

This isn’t about putting more on your plate. It’s about clearing space for what matters.

Recommitment is a quiet kind of power—and it’s deeply felt by others.

The truth is, joy doesn’t always arrive in grand gestures.

Sometimes it’s a moment of real conversation.

A laugh in a meeting.

A walk without your phone.

A thank-you that lands at just the right time.

As a leader, you don’t have to manufacture happiness.

You just need to make space for it to happen—for you, and for those around you.

Happiness Happens—When We Let It

So here’s your invitation this Awesome August:

Reconnect to what lights you up. Share it. Spread it. Let your leadership be a source of joy.

Because energy is contagious.

And joy?

Joy is leadership fuel.

What’s one small shift you can make this August to lead with more joy, clarity, and intention?

Leadership Power Shift: Why Influence Matters More Than Control in Modern Leadership

The way leadership is practiced is changing in modern organizations. Traditional power—rooted in hierarchy, control, and positional authority—was once the dominant force in organizational life.

But the modern leadership landscape has evolved. Complexity, hybrid work, diverse values, and rapid change have rendered command-and-control leadership not just outdated, but increasingly ineffective and exhausting.

This shift from control to influence is redefining what effective leadership looks like today.

Leadership vs Management: Why Organizations Still Produce Managers Instead of Leaders

What if the problem isn’t our managers… and isn’t even our senior leaders or CEOs?

Lately I’ve been wanting to write about the difference between leadership and management.

    Not from theory.
From what I keep seeing in real organizations.

This isn’t just a conversation about leadership vs management—it’s about how organizational systems shape behaviour.

In coaching conversations with senior leaders & CEOs, the same frustration comes up again and again:

“The managers need to lead more.”
    “They stay too operational.”
    “They don’t think strategically.”
    “They won’t take ownership.”
“They keep bringing problems instead of solving them.”

    Every Day Is a Gift

    March 15th was my birthday.

And March 15th, I lost my best friend.

There is something surreal about holding those two truths at the same time. One day marked by celebration, another marked by loss. One reminding me that I am still here, another reminding me that she is not.

If you have read my writing before, you know I often talk about how we live in paradox. Life is rarely either/or. It is almost always both/and. We can feel joy and grief in the same moment. We can feel gratitude and heartbreak at the same time. We can be celebrating one life while mourning another.

    This is that.

This birthday was the clearest example I have ever lived of the paradoxes I so often write about. The day I celebrate my life is now the day I will always remember hers.
