See the World Through New Eyes

Have you ever gotten into an argument where you both felt completely right, yet completely misunderstood? It’s a frustrating experience, and it highlights a crucial skill we all need to develop:perspective taking.

Perspective taking is the ability to see the world from another person’s point of view. It’s about understanding their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, even if they differ from your own. This might sound simple, but it’s actually a complex skill that requires effort and practice.

Here’s why perspective taking is so important:

  • Stronger Relationships: By understanding where someone else is coming from, you can build empathy and connection. This is essential for nurturing friendships, partnerships, and with our work colleagues. When you can see things from someone’s else’s perspective, you can communicate more effectively and resolve conflicts with ease.

  • Better Problem Solving: Many problems have multiple sides. Perspective taking allows you to consider all angles, leading to more creative and effective solutions. This is valuable in brainstorming sessions, negotiations, and any situation where collaboration is key. Just imagine how much better the solution will be.

  • Personal Growth: Stepping outside your own experience allows you to challenge your own biases and assumptions. You might discover new ways of thinking and gain a deeper understanding of the world around you. Perspective taking fosters intellectual humility and a willingness to learn and step away from judgement and assumption.

  • Reduced Conflict: Misunderstandings are a major source of conflict. Perspective taking helps you avoid jumping to conclusions and reacting impulsively. By seeing things from another perspective, you can de-escalate situations and promote a more peaceful environment.

Perspective taking isn’t about abandoning your own beliefs. It’s about acknowledging that there’s more than one way to see things. Here are some tips:

  • Active Listening: Truly pay attention to what the other person is saying, both verbally and nonverbally. Try to understand the emotions behind their words.
  • Ask Questions: Encourage the other person to elaborate on their thoughts and feelings. Open ended questions like “Can you tell me more about that?” show genuine interest and a desire to understand. Inquiry, inquiry, inquiry.
  • Consider the Context: Think about the other person’s background, experiences, and values. How might these things influence their perspective?
  • Imagine Yourself in Their Shoes: Try to visualize the situation from their point of view. What would you be thinking and feeling?
  • Imagine what the Observer is Seeing: Try to visualize the empty chair and see the situation from that point of view.  What would an observer be seeing, hearing and feeling?

Perspective taking is a skill that takes practice. The more you do it, the easier it will become. By making a conscious effort to see the world through other people’s eyes, you can build stronger relationships, solve problems more effectively, and grow as a person.

Give it a try!
